Canicross is the sport of cross-country running with your dog.
We welcome both new and seasonsed canicross runners to our race, and are excited for you to experience what the trails at Stockton State Park have to offer. We do recommend wearing trail shoes for this event. This trail is not overly technical, but has a few spots that might be a little more difficult when you're attached to a dog.
Below you will find some information about how the race will work and what the rules will be. Please do not hesitate to let us know if you have any questions. If you are new to canicross, or if this is your first race, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are happy to help as you become involved in the sport! We are also happy to provide you with gear recommendations and suggestions if you are interested in a belt, harness, line, etc.
Race Distance: 5.6k
Basic Rules: You must have a canine companion to compete in this event. Runner and dog must be attached at all times during the race. Free running is not allowed. We highly recommend that participants use a waist-belt, canicross line and harness. Running with dogs on a leash (hand held) is permitted provided that the dog is wearing a comfortable harness, and the point of attachment is on the harness itself and not pulling from the dog’s collar. *Limit of one dog per runner, we do not offer a multi-dog race category. *Your dog must be up to date on their rabies vaccination. Please bring proof with you as you may be asked to provide this information. *Retractable leashes are NOT permitted. *Metal spikes are NOT permitted. Race officials reserve the right to check shoes at the race start. *Leash/canicross line must be attached to harness (not collar)
Please be mindful of other runners and their dogs. If you need to pass someone, please give them a proper warning so they can properly advise their dog.
Weather: There is the potential for it to be very warm or very cold. Runners must ensure their dog is trained properly for this distance. Please remember to hydrate your dog before and after the run. Please keep the interest of your dog as your top priority. Your dog will follow you to the end of the earth, so please be mindful of their abilities, the weather, and other factors that may play a role in their performance on race day. Water will be available for dogs post race, and if the temps are warm, a cooling station will be available also.
Please make sure you pick up after your dog in the park.
